Abstract
Serious Games (SGs) are increasingly recognized as valuable tools in military training and operational preparation. These digital applications are designed for learning and skill development rather than entertainment. In military contexts, SGs simulate combat scenarios, strengthen strategic thinking, and encourage collaboration among personnel, while reducing the risks and costs of traditional training. This article reflects on current training practices and highlights the potential of serious games and related simulations for the armed forces. The objective is to explore how military academies and corps employ SGs to address challenges associated with real-world drills. Examples are drawn from exercises conducted by NATO forces and the Greek army. The article also presents proposed solutions and emphasizes the continuous adaptation of SGs to meet evolving operational requirements. The review of 12 games demonstrates personalized training approaches, improving preparedness by replicating complex, dynamic, and realistic combat environments. Advancing research and refining methodologies in serious games remain essential for shaping the future of military training and broader strategic planning. Finally, the article considers the prospects of SGs in military contexts, stressing their transformative potential. Emerging technologies are expected to further enhance training effectiveness and readiness, ensuring armed forces remain equipped for modern and future challenges.
