Abstract
Cooperatives play multifaceted roles in enhancing social cohesion, economic stability, and community well-being. This study thus explores Afran Qalloo Farmers’ Cooperative Union in the East Hararghe Zone as a catalyst for peace and sustainable development. By employing both empirical data and theoretical frameworks, the research highlights how the cooperative promotes collective action among farmers, strengthens social ties, and fosters an environment conducive to peaceful coexistence. The study employed a descriptive single case study research design, collecting primary data through interviews and focus group discussions, alongside secondary data from document analysis, utilising a qualitative approach with thematic analysis for data interpretation. The findings reveal that the Afran Qalloo Farmers’ Cooperative Union plays a crucial role in access to credit and inputs, access to improved seeds and products, social cohesion, and job opportunities. Despite these significant promises, the study identifies critical gaps in Union's contributions to social well-being and sustainable development initiatives. To bridge these gaps, the study recommends targeted interventions for policymakers and cooperative leaders, including the development of supportive policy frameworks, enhanced training programs, and improved access to financial resources. Ultimately, this research underscores the potential of cooperative unions to not only improve the socio-economic conditions of their members but also to contribute significantly to lasting peace and development in the study area.
