Abstract
Use of psychotropic drugs has often facilitated the integration of mentally retarded individuals into the community. However, recent research suggests that drug use may at times be contraindicated due to behavioral side effects. This article reviews the widespread prevalence of psychotropic drug use among mentally retarded individuals and examines the behavioral toxicity associated with drug use. Also included is a discussion of issues that should be considered by behavioral researchers and direct service workers.
