Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the effect of shoulder position on elbow flexion force in 24 hemiparetic stroke patients. The patients' elbow flexion forces were measured bilaterally with a hand-held dynamometer while their shoulders were in adducted and abducted (90°) positions. Elbow flexion force was not significantly different between positions on either side. Therefore, any tendency that stroke patients have to flex their elbows in “synergy” with shoulder abduction cannot be explained on the basis of a positionally dependent difference in elbow flexion force production.
