Gross Motor Development and Testing Implications According to the Pilot Edition III of the Miller Infant and Toddler Test

Abstract

The Miller Infant and Toddler Test (MITT), Pilot Edition III (Miller, 1989), a test that simultaneously analyzes the quality and quantity of gross motor skills, was used to assess sensorimotor development in 15 male and 15 female infants who were 10 months old. Other variables such as height, weight, head circumference, state of the infant, and distractions during testing were also examined. Chi-square tests with Yates correction indicated that there were no sensorimotor differences between the males and females. A positive correlation between infant state and motor performance and a negative correlation between distractions during testing and motor performance were also demonstrated. Implications of the results are discussed in regard to the MITT and to generalized testing procedures.
