Abstract
Hemodynamic, metabolic, and respiratory parameters were measured be fore aortic cross-clamping and after declamping in 14 pigs undergoing experi mental aorto-aortic bypass procedures.
The changes observed at declamping provided cumulative evidences of a loss of myocardial competence and of peculiar metabolic alterations, which were more pronounced in the cases with a lethal outcome.
These findings emphasize the need for perioperative support of physiologic functions and for the use of protective measures during aortic cross-clamping and ischemia. They also imply the possibility of using new parameters as indica tors of the severity of the alterations induced by ischemia and as prognostic indicators.
