A case of cystic degeneration of the popliteal artery is presented. The syn ovial origin of the cyst, supported by the presence of a clear connection with the knee joint, was adversed by the microscopy findings which rather suggested a primary degenerative process of the adventitial tissue. The authors agree with the hypothesis of a non-unique aetiologic and pathogenetic mechanism of origin of cystic disease of the popliteal artery.
