Abstract
The worldwide incidence of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) is increasing, and AAA remains a major source of mortality in our population. With a mortality rate of over 80% for AAA rupture, diagnosis and treatment of AAAs, although still asymptomatic, is imperative. Current techniques for eval uation of AAAs include clinical exam and radiologic modalities, which include contrast arteriography, ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic reso nance imaging. Controversy exists as to the most cost-effective technique(s) for timely diagnosis and management of AAAs. This article reviews the role of the various diagnostic techniques available for screening, nonoperative surveillance, and both open and endovascular repair of AAAs.
