Marine capture fisheries provide important, high-quality sources of protein, income and trade throughout the world. the future availability of these resources, however, is not assured, as economic and biological overfishing plagues many of the world's fisheries. in this paper, we review the use of incentive-based price instruments, such as landings and vessel taxes, to address the current crisis. We also investigate the use of price instruments as indirect means to ensure sustainability of marine mammal populations, and to optimally manage spatially distinct but connected populations.
