Some of the inflexibility of the British Zonal (BZ) classification system may be overcome by a proposed new classification (PNC) system defined mathematically as a function of room index and direct. ratio. More radical modifications to the BZ system are discussed but it is concluded that a downward flux classification system based upon direct ratios is still the best available. The inherent limitations of such a system are examined.
