Abstract
During the last few years the tungsten iodine lamp has emerged as a practical light source, though as yet its whole field of application has not been fully explored. This paper reviews the physical operation of the lamp and the factors underlying its engineering design in various ratings. Consideration is also given to the design of caps and holders. The paper shows how the characteristics of the source have led to the development of a number of types of lamp, which are classified according to their operating conditions. Problems of fittings design are also investigated, with particular reference to temperature conditions, and two typical fittings are described in relation to their fields of application. The use of the tungsten iodine lamp in floodlighting and general area lighting is dealt with in some detail, and also its application in photographic work, the entertainment industries, and airfield lighting. Reference is made to specific uses in interior lighting, and to possible applications in display lighting.
