Abstract
The paper deals with the two component parts of a luminous ceiling: the luminous membrane, with reference to degrees of diffusion, transmission and reflection of light; the cavity above it, and the effects of reflectance and obstructions, and the disposition of lamps and gear within the cavity. A section deals with the calculation of illumination by the British Zonal Method, with special reference to the effect of the direct light component in louvered ceilings; this is followed by a short section on glare, and a discussion of maintenance. The fire regulations of the LCC and other authorities are described, and also the requirements of Insurance Companies for sprinkler installations. The effect of space-heating is discussed, and the paper concludes with a review of standard types of luminous ceilings available in this country and the USA.
