With the introduction of the new GMS contract, GPs need to treat patients efficiently and effectively in order to achieve Quality and Outcomes Framework points. The VALUE trial has shown that aggressive treatment of hypertension minimises the risk of further cardiovascular outcomes. Dr Sarah Jarvis, a GP, notes that applying the results of this trial to clinical practice will help GPs reach their targets and protect hypertensive patients against further health risks such as new onset diabetes.
