National Cultures and Organisations in Search of a Theory

Abstract

The idea of a national culture is generally challenged by those using an interpretative approach. They argue that, within a given society, one comes across rival definitions of reality. But it is possible to present a theory enabling us to take into consideration what is diverse and changing as well as what is shared and stable. We will base our demonstration on empirical research related to the US and France. We will be referring to two main ideas. On the one hand, within one country, a core concern is at the heart of social existence. On the other, people, using very diverse ways, strive to find forms of organisation as well as representations that enable their members to cope with this concern. In the US, reference to the contract is pivotal, whereas in France, the main reference would be to one’s ‘métier ’.

La notion de culture nationale est largement mise en cause par ceux qui font appel à une approche interprétative. Ils se fondent sur le fait qu’on rencontre des visions contrastées de la réalité au sein d’une même société. Pourtant il est possible de présenter une théorie permettant de rendre compte de ce qui est divers et changeant en même temps que de ce qui est stable et partagé. La démonstration s’appuie sur des travaux empiriques portant sur les Etats-Unis et la France. D’un côté, au sein de chaque société, l’existence est marquée par l’existence d’une crainte majeure. De l’autre, de grands efforts sont faits, de multiples manières, pour trouver des représentations et des formes d’organisation qui permettent de conjurer cette crainte. La référence au contrat aux Etats-Unis et au métier en France joue un rôle stratégique en la matière.
