Abstract
Machinima — here defined as ‘the art of creating original animated movies using pre-existing, three-dimensional graphics engines’ — is the latest step in the evolution of communication, according to the author. Above all, it demonstrates how mainstream media can be used as a platform for self-expression. It can be interpreted as either a commentary on society or a reaction to the increasing digitalization of contemporary culture. The author concludes that machinima is both documenting and commenting on the social evolution of our technologically-driven society.
