Abstract
Many buildings contain mineral fibres used as structural elements or as insula tion. The aging of these products and their disturbance or removal can cause the liberation of fibres into the indoor air. The health effects of these materials continues to be a subject of considerable concern, which together with the cost and disruption involved in asbestos removal causes particular problems. The fibres used in buildings are described with an emphasis on the newer man- made fibres. These are used mainly as insulation wools and do not become readily airborne. The relevance of these results to human risk assessment is discussed.
