Abstract
In recent years the Chinese government has greatly influenced tourism development by shifting its role from operator and regulator to that of investment coordinator, stimulator and educator. The rapid worldwide growth of timeshare has attracted the attention of the Chinese National Tourism Administration (CNTA). This paper focuses on the social, economic and institutional frameworks existing in and affecting the development of timeshare in China. The cultural issues and the concept of property ownership, the lack of experience in the supply sector and the general infrastructure standards are issues that may inhibit the growth of a timeshare industry. However, the emerging middle class in China, the political response to the tourism industry and the economic climate do signify that the development and expansion of a Chinese timeshare industry has potential.
