Abstract
Journalism is not a homogeneous product: some of it is very strong and valuable, but quite a lot is dross. While some journalism research output is rushed, inadequate, naïve, ill considered and even inaccurate or misguided, quite a lot is exactly the opposite. The same can be said of academic research output. Whether university research committees and funding bodies should recognize journalism as academic research output depends on whether the journalism product under consideration is of sufficiently high quality.
