Abstract
Sandwich composites are widely used in structural applications because of their high specific strength and bending stiffness. Core materials of these sandwich structures are commonly constructed out of low density particulate composites. The use of these core materials requires an extensive study of their mechanical properties along with better characterization techniques. The pulse echo ultrasound is one of the methods used for nondestructive evaluation of these materials. The present study focuses on the effect of volume fraction of solid glass particles on the ultrasonic properties of solid particulate core materials. Coefficient of attenuation, ultrasonic wave velocities and dynamic Young's modulus are observed to depend on the volume fraction of solid glass particles.
