Abstract
Background:
We previously described sleeve gastrectomy (SG) with jejunoileal bypass (SGJIB) as a promising novel technique for the surgical treatment of obesity. In a cohort study, it was associated with similar weight loss and reduced postoperative morbidity when compared to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
Methods:
A retrospective analysis of a prospective database in a private practice of alimentary tract surgery in São Paulo, Brazil. We analyzed 140 patients with 12 months of follow-up, 74 of whom underwent SGJIB and 66 receding conventional SG.
Results:
SG was associated with a significant increase in weight loss in 1 year after the procedure (adjusted Coef: 0.71, [95 % CI: 0.30 to 1.12], P = .01). Postoperative morbidity was similar between groups.
Conclusion:
SGJIB is a novel surgical procedure for weight loss associated with greater weight loss and similar postoperative morbidity when compared to SG.
