Abstract

Greetings, and Happy 2020!
I am excited to introduce our first issue of 2020, as we have some very special content in this issue! The 2019 annual meeting of the American College of Toxicology (ACT) was a celebration of ACT’s 40th annual meeting, and there was both a festive and intense scientific feeling in the air throughout the entire meeting. In this issue of International Journal of Toxicology, we feature an article by Dr David Serota that continues the history of ACT from 2004 to 2018, picking up where our previous ACT history article by Founding Editor Mildred Christian left off. 1 We also feature some basic research articles, the abstracts of posters presented at the ACT annual meeting, a book review, and my brief “thank you” to our ad hoc reviewers. Look for some articles that summarize previous ACT annual meeting sessions in our next issue of 2020.
At the ACT annual meeting in November, 2019, the CHARGE40 committee, chaired by ACT Past President Dr David Serota, presented a comprehensive celebration of ACT’s accomplishments and milestones in a carefully orchestrated celebration, complete with the music and lights. Honored participants included many other ACT past presidents, as well as former ACT Executive Director Carol Lemire, former ACT Assistant Executive Director Eve Kagan, and one of the charter members of the College, Dr Mohamed B. Abou-Donia (who was one of my professors in graduate school at Duke University, and still an active professor at Duke)!
At the annual meeting Awards Ceremony, the College honored Dr A. Jay Gandolfi (Professor Emeritus, University of Arizona) with ACT’s Distinguished Scientist Award in Toxicology. Former ACT Presidents Dr Mary Ellen Cosenza, Dr Kenneth Hastings, and Dr John Atkinson received the ACT Mildred Christian Women’s Leadership in Toxicology Award, the ACT Service Award, and the Carol C. Lemire Unsung Hero Award, respectively. Dr Francis Wolenski received the ACT Early Career Professional Award, and the winners of the Award for the Best Paper Published in International Journal of Toxicology in 2018 2 were recognized, with lead author Armaghan Emami accepting the award on behalf of all coauthors.
Speaking of the Best Paper award, it is time to nominate a paper published in International Journal of Toxicology in 2019 for ACT’s next Best Paper award! Any paper published in the print edition of the journal is eligible, and the selection criteria are simple: Published in the previous calendar year in International Journal of Toxicology; Addresses contemporary issue(s) in toxicology; Shows immediate positive impact as measured by citations, downloads, and Altmetric score; Has potential to have broad and long-lasting impact on the field or practice of toxicology.
If you happen to receive only the online version of the journal, or you have misplaced an issue from last year, see all previously published articles at the Journal tab on the ACT website. The final decision for the 2019 Best Paper award will be made by members of the Editorial Board, and we value all input that we receive from ACT members! As with other ACT award nominations, these are due on or before March 31 each year. The application process is simple and details can be found on the ACT website: https://www.actox.org/aboutACT/awards.asp.
I look forward to receiving original articles and session overview articles from many of you over the course of 2020.
