Abstract

Greetings, and Happy 2017!
Welcome to the exciting first issue of International Journal of Toxicology for 2017! This issue truly has something for everyone. Our lead article is the first in what will be an annual feature, namely a Research Career Overview article. As many of you know, Dr Mildred Christian was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American College of Toxicology, which was later renamed International Journal of Toxicology. Since 2011, the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS) annually presents the Mildred S. Christian Career Achievement Award to honor the memory of Dr Christian to an ATS Fellow who has clearly demonstrated a lasting impact on toxicological sciences. Prior winners of this distinguished recognition include Bruce Ames (2011), Curt Klaassen (2012), Roger O. McClellan (2013), I. Glenn Sipes (2015), and Melvin E. Andersen (2016). Therefore, after discussions with ATS leadership, we decided that the winners of the Mildred S. Christian Award would be invited to write an article about their careers, a Research Career Overview article, based on a list of interview-style questions. Please enjoy Dr Mel Andersen’s article. I have known Mel for many years, but I learned a lot about him, his distinguished career, and his love of his family from his responses
Other features of our first issue of 2017 include a review article on Cranial Nerve VIII toxicity (based in part on a symposium presented at the 2016 American College of Toxicology [ACT] Annual Meeting), several regular articles, a book review, the abstracts of the posters presented at the 2016 ACT Annual Meeting in Baltimore, and an In Memoriam for DA Henderson, a vaccination pioneer who is credited with eradicating the world of smallpox. Enjoy!
For our International Journal of Toxicology authors, SAGE, our publisher, has rolled out a new tool for editing page proofs of articles accepted for publication. The new system, SAGE Edit, is an entirely online tool, which allows authors to see in real time how their revised article will appear. So far, our authors have been very pleased with this tool and have found it easy to use.
One of the extremely prestigious awards presented at the ACT Annual Meeting each year is the President’s Award for the Best Paper published in International Journal of Toxicology. Now that we have hung up our shiny new 2017 calendars, it is time to look back at all of the articles published in International Journal of Toxicology in 2016 and nominate a deserving paper for this distinguished award. Although there are no specified requirements for papers to be considered for this award, nominations are generally for papers that are likely to have a lasting impact on the field of toxicology or to greatly expand knowledge in a particular area of toxicology. The “Awards and Honors” link to submit your nomination is under the “About ACT” tab on the ACT Web site (https://www.actox.org). All nominations received by the March 31, 2017, deadline will be considered by the ACT Publications Committee, which makes the final recommendation for the Best Paper award based on nominations received from Journal readers and the committee’s nominations.
Thank you for your continued support of International Journal of Toxicology. I am proud and honored to continue as the Journal’s editor, and I welcome your feedback and input. Anyone who would like to serve the Journal in any capacity will be most welcome—please contact me and I’ll put you to work!
All the best for a happy, healthy, and productive 2017!
