The reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1990 (IDEA) has been hailed as a civil rights victory in the education of persons with disabilities. Tenets of the act seek to strengthen the role of parents, better ensure access to the general education curriculum, modify procedures related to the discipline of students with disabilities, and adapt how the Individualized Education Program is developed and written. In this article, key areas of IDEA 1997 are reviewed. Potential issues in implementation and practical suggestions for school personnel and parents are discussed.
