Abstract
The past few years have been tumultuous for air transportation. As is well known, the air transport industry was dealt a series of substantial blows in 2001 that forced the industry to contract. The articles included in this special issue discuss the effects of these events and offer a balanced account of the air transport industry in general. Although the events of September 11 and the various changes implemented by the air carriers have undoubtedly had a negative impact on air transport, there is no sign that the industry will not remain a critical component in the global economy and the national system of transportation. The collection of articles presented herein contribute to our understanding of critical issues in air transport at an important time in the industry’s ongoing evolution.
