Abstract
Professional practice and shared governance are two models of nursing practice that began to emerge in the 1980s. These are two models that are used frequently by organizations as they look to decrease costs while maintaining quality patient outcomes. Peer review is a tool that can be used to measure staff competence. This article will look at the basic concepts of shared governance and how peer review fits into that model. In addition, it will also look at how one unit within a large nursing department implemented peer review in a practice setting where it did not seem possible.
