The use of aerosolized pentamidine has proven to be a very effective treatment for active Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in HIV+ patients as well as a prophylactic treatment to prevent recurrences. Home administration is both safe and effective if both the home care staff and the patient are well educated and supported. This article provides the clinician with the theoretical and procedural information needed to assist the patient. The article also reflects the importance of close collaboration between the home health agency staff and the durable medical equipment company staff.
