The issues regarding health care to the African American population have been examined from a number of angles. The authors argue that the trust between provider and patient is both critical and not well understood. This article examines reasons for resistance from African American patients and the historical, cultural, and psychological roots of the mistrust forming that resistance. Issues influencing the development of trusting attitudes needed for effective participation in their own care are examined, and the role of attachment in developing the ability to trust those with the power is seen as highly significant.
