Abstract
Cultural competency is a necessary component of health care delivery. A nurse educator was faced with this brutal fact while supervising a student assigned to care for an elder Lakota woman. The educator sought guidance from Lakota leaders within the community to assist in integrating Lakota culture and cultural competency into the nursing curriculum. The education program and the Lakota advisors partnered in seeking grant funding to create educational materials. This article describes the journey of seeking wisdom and collaborating to move toward meaningful change.
