Abstract
The literature indicates that many families fail to plan adequately for the future of a member with disabilities. The current study sought to examine barriers and motivating factors toward future planning in a small group of parents of children with developmental disabilities. Barriers to financial planning and planning for decision making included a lack of information in the service community and a lack of under-standing among professionals on what should be done. Motivation for planning came primarily from concerns raised by parents or other family members. Results of this study will be useful in planning educa-tional programs for families and professionals on this topic.
