The relationship of gender, educational level, and past occupation to the Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQs was evaluated for a Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) old-age normative sample. Gender differences did not meaningfully influence the WAIS-R scores of persons 75 years of age and older, but differences due to education and past occupation were marked. Persons with? 12 years of education earned Full Scale IQs that were 17 points higher than the composite score for individuals with < 11 years of education. Those with a history of professional/managerial employment outscored retired operatives/laborers on the Full Scale IQ by approximately 16 points.
