The Effects of Using VR Technologies as Intervention Methods for Children with ASD – A Literature Review

Abstract

Children with ASD may struggle with daily living due to a lack of interoceptive abilities; however, self-regulation enhances their quality of life and provides opportunities. Virtual Reality (VR) is used as an innovative intervention tool influencing skill improvement through the design of immersive, controlled environments. This article explores VR technology interventions while narrowing the focus to self-regulatory and interoceptive skills. The goal of the study is to demonstrate the effects of VR on this population and evaluate the use of human factors in the design and implementation. A literature review of 19 articles highlights the role of self-regulation among individuals with ASD and how VR technologies can be effective in the improvement of social, communicative, and cognitive skills. The findings indicate the positive therapeutic impact of VR and possible underlying human factors principles leading to such outcomes. This review emphasizes the need for further research and adaptation of VR technologies as interventions for children with ASD.
