A local marriage and family counselor would like to start a network in which therapists provide counseling sessions at no charge to other therapists. In return for every session that the therapist provides, he or she earns a credit for one session, at no charge, with another therapist in the network. The counselor feels that this would provide valuable services for area therapists, along the lines of the professional courtesy provided by physicians to other physicians. Apart from the logistics involved, would or could this be an ethical arrangement? What safeguards would need to be maintained?
