Abstract
This article describes a study designed to elicit economic and demographic data relative to the spectators attending the United States Men's Clay Court Championships held at the Wild Dunes Resort located in Charleston, South Carolina.
From a questionnaire randomly distributed to 1200 spectators, data were collected on a study population of 468. The results describe the average spectator in terms of demographic characteristics; economic, educational and employment status; and personal preferences for tournament amenities, sport participation, sporting event attendance, and the viewing of televised sport. In addition, data are presented pertaining to the ownership of upscale products and automobile preferences. Although specific to the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships, the data generated by this study are of potential value to event promoters, sponsors, advertisers, site hosts, and others interested in the economic and demographic characteristics of sporting event spectators, in general, and tennis spectators, in particular.
