Different Amharic names were given to Ethiopian modern education. The purpose of this article was to analyze these names given to it from its commencement to the present against it. To achieve this purpose, 40 names were collected using document analysis and interview and were analyzed qualitatively using thematic analysis. The analysis disclosed that different Amharic names were given for it to reflect opposition to it starting from its inception to the present. The findings revealed that the names given to Ethiopian modern education have different implications that are related to relevance, work discipline, indigenousness, equity and access, spirituality and religion, and politics.
