Lived experiences of women with fibromyalgia in Türkiye: A qualitative study

Abstract

Background

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), characterized by widespread body pain, is more prevalent in women than in men.

Objective

This qualitative study aimed to explore the lived experiences of women diagnosed with FMS, their coping methods, and recommendations for managing the condition.

Method

A descriptive qualitative design was employed. In-depth interviews were conducted with 18 women diagnosed with FMS (mean age 49.9 ± 12.07 years; time since diagnosis 1–20 years), between June and August 2024, using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed through inductive content analysis, supported by MAXQDA Plus software.

Result

Content analysis yielded five main categories and sixteen subcategories. The main categories were: (1) The relief provided with the FMS diagnosis, (2) Life events that contributed to the development of FMS, (3) Challenges caused by FMS, (4) Methods used to cope with the symptoms caused by FMS, and (5) Recommendations for FMS management.

Conclusions

The diagnosis of FMS leads to multifaceted challenges in women's physical, psychological, social, and spiritual domains. As recommended by the women, effective management of FMS requires a multidisciplinary team approach that includes family education, psychological support, and spiritual care.
