Abstract
This study looks closely at how inequality operates in egalitarian groups. It is wellestablished in the literature that some type of unequal power dynamic always occurs in democratic organizations, but there is little information on the structure of those dynamics. By using a multiple case study participant observation approach, it was discovered that democratic groups have a fluid orientation toward equality that moves them across two dimensions of power: structure, the extent to which the power relationships are formalized, and struggle, the extent to which the relationships are contested.
