Over the last two decades in France, significant gaps have developed between the competitively based favoured by traditional sporting organizations and the burgeoning individually oriented leisure activities of both youth and the new middle classes. This paper examines this phenomenon in the context of wider socio-demographic developments in France since the 1960s.
