Abstract
Understanding household expenditure patterns is crucial for analysing well-being and socio-economic dynamics. This study aims to examine the variations in entertainment expenditure across Indian states and Union Territories, highlighting socio-economic and cultural influences. Using data from the recent Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2022–23, this article employs descriptive analysis and the Tobit model to analyse regional spending trends and their determinants. The findings reveal significant urban–rural disparities, with urban areas consistently showing higher average entertainment expenditures. States like Bihar and Chhattisgarh exhibit substantial inequality in entertainment spending, while states like Kerala and Goa show more balanced expenditure patterns. The analysis underscores the impact of income, age, gender, religion and social status on entertainment spending. Policymakers should focus on promoting equitable access to entertainment and cultural services, addressing socio-economic disparities and fostering inclusive development strategies to enhance cultural engagement and leisure opportunities across regions.
