Abstract
While understanding the current situation and the nature of pervading challenges, this article explores the scope for mutual cooperation between the Asian giants, namely, China and India, in the sphere of energy. It brings out that the two economies are heavily dependent on coal and the oil dominance remains largely irreplaceable. Similarly, the consumption of natural gas has been gaining significance. But, the renewable resources are not adequately harnessed. With regard to major challenges, the article notes the widespread incidence of energy poverty and inequality. There prevails a high level of energy inefficiency. Assured long-run supply of hydrocarbons remains the concern and the pace of harnessing renewable energy sources is slow. The article finally examines the scope for mutual cooperation by locating various areas within the energy sector.
