Abstract
Introduction
Breastfeeding is not a choice it is a shared responsibility of the mother. Breastfeeding is a right of every baby. Common breastfeeding positions are side-lying, cradle hold, cross-cradle hold, football, laid-back. There is a little data available to compare different breastfeeding positions in terms of maternal comfort. This study was conducted with the objective to see the effect of breastfeeding positions on weight pattern and urine frequency along with maternal comfort and Latching on, Audible swallowing, Type of nipples, Comfort, and Help (LATCH) score.
Objectives
The aim of this study was to compare effect of two breastfeeding techniques (cradle and cross-cradle) of mother delivered by normal vaginal delivery on weight pattern of term newborn and to compare maternal comfort, LATCH score, and urinary frequency between the two groups.
Methods
This randomized controlled trial is performed in 200 mother newborn dyad of gestational age between 37 and 42 weeks. The weight loss pattern, maternal comfort, and LATCH score was compared between the two groups.
Results
Among 200 newborns, 55.5% were males and 44.5% were females. Study observed that there is no significant difference in mean weight loss between two positions; however, urine frequency between cradle group and cross-cradle group was statistically highly significant (p-value <0.001). Cross-cradle breastfeeding position showed higher maternal comfort score and LATCH score than cradle breastfeeding position.
Conclusion
This study explores that cross-cradle breastfeeding position is better in terms of maternal comfort and baby’ latchment than cradle breastfeeding position.
