The Role of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Chinstraps in the Development of Neonatal Suppurative Parotitis

Abstract

Neonatal suppurative parotitis is a rare entity in the neonatal period that typically presents with unilateral parotid swelling, tenderness, erythema, and purulent drainage of Stensen’s duct. We present a 6-week-old male with a history of prematurity who exhibited physical exam findings suspicious for a suppurative parotitis. We propose that the extended use of continuous positive airway pressure chinstraps may be a contributing factor to the development of suppurative parotitis in our neonates. This case accentuates a unique presentation of neonatal suppurative parotitis.
