Hume brought Rousseau back to England with him, and found him a country house where he could feel safe from persecution. Shortly thereafter a mocking letter about Rousseau was circulated, probably written by Horace Walpole. However, Rousseau suspected Hume and accused him publicly, to the delight of English literati.
