In this article I explore the consequences of the recent linguistic paradigm shift towards pragmatics which has initiated a broader range of methods and areas of investigation within linguistics. Using accounts of free indirect discourse as a test case I will attempt to illustrate how this paradigm shift has made it possible to further bridge the divide between the literary and the linguistic outlook on language.
