The official documents of the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) referring to colorimetry do not provide the information required for determining the values of colour-matching functions, in spite of the fundamental role they play in computing the major characteristics of colour stimuli. This paper formulates the steps leading from the bases of a colorimetric system to expressions for the colour-matching functions. A quantity denoted 'characteristic luminance of chromaticity' or 'phatachramic coefficient' has been introduced; this is not presently officially recognised. To remove the present deficiencies in nomenclature, a few editorial suggestions are made.
