A simple mathematical model of illumination from a cloudy sky

Abstract

A new mathematical model to simulate the distribution of light from cloudy skies is developed from very simple assumptions on the probability of cloud occurrence and the light transmission of clouds. It enables an overcast sky luminance distribution to be derived from given clear sky and solar illuminances, and the main characteristics of recent survey results to be reproduced.
