The CIE has recommended a method for calculating colour rendering index from the spectral power distribution of a light source. Any error in the power distribution assumed will lead to an error in the colour rendering index. The results of a series of measurements on fluorescent lamps made in a number of laboratories are reported and the significance of the differences in the colour rendering indices obtained is discussed.
