Abstract
Lighting plays a vital part in the operation of British Railways and railway lighting engineers are concerned with a wide range of buildings and exterior installations as well as with the lighting of railway stations. The task of lighting all such areas to suitable standards is handicapped by lack of funds and by the fact that many of the buildings are old. Nevertheless extensive use is made of the latest light sources, equipment, and techniques. One of the most important developments in recent years has been the change from steam to diesel and electrical locomotion which has considerably influenced the type of lighting equipment which can be used for station and operational lighting.
