Abstract
The University of St Andrews' Astronomy Department possesses an important optical observatory engaged on observations of faint nebulae, measurements which are possible only if the night sky is dark. Proposed improvements in street lighting in the adjacent town might have made observations impossible; an investigation was undertaken. This paper records calculation of the distribution of haze luminance in the sky due to two components of light from street lighting. In this instance it appeared possible to effect a substantial improvement in the street lighting without producing a proportional increase in the sky luminance.
