Abstract
This paper reviews the modelling and control issues relevant to automated highway systems (AHSs). Following a clarification of the definition of AHSs and an identification of its unique characteristics, the bulk of the paper addresses the methods and available tools for design and evaluation of AHSs. This review is subdivided by layers of a hierarchical system architecture in order to reduce the topic to manageable dimensions. The paper concludes with an identification of some of the key continuing research needs in AHSs.
