Abstract
A systematic review of the literature on End-of-Life Electric Vehicle Batteries (EOLEVB) reuse is performed. The intent is to map the existing knowledge base and identify the ongoing and emerging issues. A total of 569 articles (2015–2024) from Web of Science and Scopus are analyzed, stylized by sub-periods, to capture the research evolution. The package VOS Viewer is used to conduct the bibliographic coupling and keyword co-occurrence analysis, to establish the core and sub-themes. The review identifies the techno-economic feasibility of EOLEVB for energy storage, degradation modelling, and state-of-health assessment as ongoing research themes. Circular economic perspectives such as material/substance flow, extended producer responsibility, and safety risk of EOLEVB are central to the research theme and deserve further attention. Scenario-based life cycle assessment and economic analysis of automated disassembly are peripheral and underexplored themes, while supply chain facility location and collection are regarded as more specialized and relatively isolated from the other major research themes. From the themes identified, the current challenges and research gaps are then synthesized by integrating the technical, economic, environmental, social and legal dimensions. The major technical gaps include a lack of standardized EOELVB assessment, battery management system development methods for second-life applications. Reprocessed EOLEVB market price uncertainty and the economic viability of automated disassembly require research attention. There also exist weak circular economic policies and limited attention to the social (safety, trust, consumer willingness to pay) and environmental (design for reuse) aspects. Among the reuse strategies, repurposing stationary energy storage received much attention.
